It’s not every day that you come across a listen worthy mixtape. However, Big Tim’s “Behind Bars The Mixtape ” is one of them! With a versatile arrangement of the industry’s hottest tracks, Big Tim certainly delivers; from the high energy “High Beams On” to the trap inspired “King”. Traditionally, Christian rap has always followed a certain formula. Big Tim has definitely broken that mold and created his own sound.

“Behind Bars The Mixtape” is a musical compilation that is sure to resonate with the younger generation who may not connect with Christ via the traditional gospel of our parents and grandparents. Anything that lends itself to bringing more people to Christ will always have my support! “Behind Bars Mixtape” is a proud addition to any contemporary gospel music collection! I recently had the pleasure of catching up with Big Tim. Find out more about the man behind the music in the interview below!! Be sure to check out “Behind Bars The Mixtape” at www.bigtimmusic.com !!

Big Tim

When did you realize you had a gift or passion for music, specifically gospel rap?

I really began to realize I was passionate about music and performing around the second grade. As a kid, I started off singing, playing the drums, and getting involved with local music programs to learn more about the art. As I grew older, I fell in love with rap. I would memorize and recite the lyrics to songs where the rappers’ delivery was fast…kind of similar to that of someone like Twista. Eventually, I got into writing and recording my own songs. I started off writing about the things I saw growing up…sex…drugs…poverty….you know the story. Anyways, I just remember recording my music one day and thinking to myself, “why?” I mean…my life was different. I had already left home, graduated college, and thinking about getting married & starting a family. I realized I was wasting my time on something that was not true to who I had become. I was living a double life; I was active in church on Sundays and doing whatever was “cool” the rest of the week. I just remember one day saying to God, “I’m going to do this for you. You are where my focus needs to be.” I prayed, starting writing, and the rest was history.

How did you go about utilizing your gift in regards to taking it from a passion to a profession?

Education…I am a firm believer in investing into yourself. I spent money on professional equipment. I paid for training on professionalism in the entertainment industry. I worked hard to make sure anything I presented was to best of whatever abilities I had at that moment. It’s an ongoing process, and I’m amazed everyday to see how much I’m learning. My thoughts are, if you want to make your passion your profession you have to work it like a real 9 to 5 consistently. It doesn’t matter if you’re making money or not. You have to respect your passion, even when nobody else does. You have to work with whatever you have now, and don’t wait on “ideal” circumstances to get to work. God honors your hard work. This is especially true when you are working hard towards the desires he placed in you.

What would you like people to come away with after listening to your music?

A reason to read The Bible. I try to uncover interesting, little known facts about what’s written in The Bible to make people think, “Is that true? I’m going to Google and check on that one.” Or, sometimes I point the listener directly to a scripture. For example, in my song “He’s Amazing,” I point out the fact that God didn’t actually put the Sun in place until day four.

What’s the #1 piece of advice you can give to those trying to find their passion and eventually use it to serve a larger purpose?

Pray. Take some time to seriously ask God what is it He wants you to do and how. The “how” is just as important as the “what.” Take action…don’t sit on your butt and do nothing. Be brave and take chances. Don’t let other people’s opinion take you off of your path. Most importantly…relax, have fun, and do whatever is necessary to set yourself up to have no choice but to believe you can succeed.

“Big Tim is a young man who is truly ‘Rep’n God.’ His story dispels the myth that single mothers cannot raise a male child to be successful, positive, productive, and God-fearing.”

Overall Thoughts:

Christ centered rap.. the songs are a good length.. not too long.. so none of the beats seem like they are over played or ever get close to annoying..

Recording Thoughts:

Pretty Good ... Semi-Professional

Stand Outs:

"He's Amazing" - very simple message.. but put forth quite well.. some quite slick rapping as wel (ads are in this song)

"Custody" - very interesting song.. I actually really liked this message.. so very cool way to portray this.. really shows in a more 'modern' way that Jesus fights for us.. and it sounds pretty sweet too..

"King" - really sweet lifting of Christ in life.. not to be afraid to lift up Christ as King within oneself.. the material in battle with the spiritual

"I Got It" - what one gains from God.. very cool.. very uplifting!

"He's The Boss" - I enjoyed the declaration!
